Cost To Stain A Deck
The cost for staining a deck is $3.00 to $3.50 per square foot for horizontal surfaces. It’s $6.00 per square foot of step, rail, and lattice. Before staining, most decks need either a soft wash, chemical stripping with brightening, or physical stripping.
Soft washes are used on newer decks. It costs $.20 to $.30 per square foot. Chemical stripping and brightening are for old oil-based stains. It costs $1.00 to $1.50 per square foot.
Physical stripping involves sanding the deck. This is typically for old decks or when it has a latex-based stain on it and you want to use an oil-based stain. Since it takes more labor and materials it costs $3 to $4 per square foot.
What Can Increase The Overall Cost
There are some factors that cause the cost to go up. These need more time and materials to stain or protect from getting stained.
4-foot posts are $20 a post to stain while 10-foot and taller posts are $25 per. Ladders are needed to reach the top of taller posts, which is another tool we have to bring and it takes more time to stain.
If your deck has footing or a retaining wall it’s $100 flat to cover it with tarps and/or plastic. If you have a few plants on or around your deck it’ll cost $30 to protect them while if it’s a lot of plants the cost is $50. It can be difficult to work around plants.
Covering pools to prevent any overspray from getting in the water or on the cover is $50.
